DIY Cloud Computing - Build and Rightsize Your Own Cloud

12/7/2009 8:25:00 AM

With its scalability, pay-as-you-go pricing, and ease of access, cloud computing has become an attractive application platform for many corporate environments. However, an external cloud doesn't provide an appropriate solution when security is a key factor, or when the end-user audience requires specific application functionality. This session will explore the benefits of a build-your-own approach to cloud computing, when the option makes sense, and the process required to achieve it. You'll learn how to:

  • Choose the right data center(s)
  • Get necessary network connections
  • Create the application platform
  • Provide security
  • Put people, processes, and monitoring in place

    Partner Interview with Latisys

    12/7/2009 9:10:00 AM

    Businesses with seasonal or unpredictable workloads - or even just those that don't want to incur high capital costs for data center expansion -- are increasingly turning to managed services and co-location as an alternative to data center buildouts. But not all service providers are the same. Data center managers need to carefully evaluate priorities like security, flexibility and interoperability before choosing a partner. Here are some guidelines from one enterprise-class company.

    Steve Merkel
    Director, Solutions Engineering

    Data Center Resilience

    12/7/2009 9:30:00 AM

    This presentation will provide you with valuable insight into the new approaches that companies are taking to provide rapid restore times and data synchronization without huge costs. The discussion will start with the presentation of models that can be used to build a business case for resilience versus recovery.

  • The ideal characteristics of a recovery solution;
  • Methods for choosing the right mitigation strategy for your organization;
  • Considerations for data center resilience;
  • Data protection options; and
  • Technical challenges that IT organizations face in the process.

    This session is for anybody who is considering enhancing the availability and recovery of their data center; is involved in a major data center consolidation or migration; or is implementing an enterprise-wide ERP application.

    Growing Storage Without Adding Capacity

    12/7/2009 10:15:00 AM

    The growth of unstructured data presents huge opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings in data center storage. Customers can now deploy techniques like NAS head consolidation, file tiering, capacity management, archive reduction and intelligent backup to save 30% or more on their existing storage investments and improve capacity. Hitachi Data Systems' Peter Sjoberg tells how.

    Protecting Your Data Center Assets

    12/7/2009 11:05:00 AM

    With computer security breaches rising and power levels fluctuating, data center managers are under more pressure than ever to ensure the integrity of their assets. In this discussion, partners from CommVault and American Power Conversion discussed the latest technologies their customers are deploying to ensure peace of mind while conserving energy and labor investment.

    Achieving Massive ROI Benefits Through Large-Scale Virtualization

    12/7/2009 11:25:00 AM

    The ROI of migrating to a fully virtualized environment is so compelling that data center executives are doing their businesses a disservice by not moving aggressively now. Many organizations can achieve consolidation inefficiencies of 10:1 by virtualizing underutilized servers and dramatically driving up efficiency. This has spillover benefits in power/cooling, floor space and reduce management overhead, among other things. Bill Hussain provides real-life examples of virtualization payoff and recommends strategies for selling business side partners and driving awareness throughout the organization.

    Peace Of Mind In The Cloud

    12/7/2009 12:10:00 PM

    In today's economy, data center investments are under the microscope. Cloud computing presents an attractive alternative, but corporations are understandably reluctant to outsource their critical operations to an unknown data center in the sky. There is another option: Virtual data centers are managed by a trusted third party at a hardened and secure location with full accountability to the customer. Steve Herman describes the advantages.

    Lunch Keynote - From Servers to Servant Leaders - Data Center Leadership

    12/7/2009 1:25:00 PM

    Someone must have the foresight and leadership to plan, execute and maintain the company's most valuable information assets. Our technology teams, especially those focused on the data center, are that collective someone. Yet IT professionals are often so busy studying the latest trends and keeping the lights on that we don't step back to examine our role as leaders in the organization. This presentation goes beyond the nuts and bolts of technology to talk about a trend that is gaining popularity in business: Servant Leadership. Research shows that servant-led companies are among the top performing institutions. We'll examine the importance of the data center to corporate leadership, what Servant Leadership is and how you can apply it for the success of your data center and your business.

    New Frontiers in Data Storage

    12/7/2009 1:55:00 PM

    Storage has been one of the fastest growing line items in IT budgets for the last five years. While the cost of raw storage continues to plummet, the resources needed to manage it have been steadily increasing. New technologies promise to cut costs by consolidating and virtualizing on a massive scale, but there are a dizzying number of options from which to choose. This panel looks at the most promising new storage technologies from a dollars and cents perspective.

    Securing and Optimizing the Data Center

    12/7/2009 2:15:00 PM

    Clouds and virtualization offer new options for creating a more robust and efficient data center, but both carry their share of risk. This Q&A interview with NetFunction's Rakesh Pitroda looks at how these technologies are being deployed to address the most common problems of legacy environments.

    Cloud Computing and SOA: What's the Connection?

    12/7/2009 2:35:00 PM

    Service oriented architecture (SOA) is now widely accepted as a fast and cost-effective means of building software. Cloud computing takes the concept of applications as collections of services a step further. It's taking the architectural principle of SOA and applying it to an infrastructure. The cloud will quickly become an essential part of enterprise SOA.

    By adopting SOA, an enterprise can better prepare for cloud computing. SOA reveals the challenges an organization faces internally in supporting service components. These are challenges that cloud services will exacerbate if not addressed. Both SOA and cloud computing require a governance layer and a strong understanding of processes. Hector Hernandez describes how cloud computing enriches and extends the SOA concept and how data center managers can use cloud concepts to build a more flexible business from IT assets.
